Đặc điểm cây

Cây nhỏ, phân cành đa dạng, cao 5 – 10 m. Thân cành tỏa rộng, màu nâu sẫm, có nốt sần.

- Lá mọc so le, hình trứng hoác bầu dục, thỉnh thoảng hình mác – dong dỏng, đầu nhọn, mép khía răng nhỏ, hai mặt nhẵn, mặt trên sẫm bóng, mặt dưới nhạt; lá kèm sớm rụng.

- Cụm hoa mọc ở kẽ lá hoặc đầu cành thành chùm, hoa màu vàng, dài thường mọc gập xuống lúc hoa nở, tràng 5 cánh mỏng tương đối dài hơn lá đài, nhị nhiều: bầu thượng chứa 10 – 12 noãn.

- Quả hạch, dài 6 – 7 mm, lúc chín mầu đen, chứa 1 hạt: các quả xếp thành vòng đều.

Phân bố, sinh thái

Phân bố

Chi Ochna L, gồm vài loài là cây bụi hay gỗ nhỏ, phân bố rải rác ở vùng nhiệt đới và cận nhiệt đới châu Á, châu Phi và Mỹ Latinh. Ở Việt Nam có 2 loài.

Hoa mai vàng có vùng phân bố chính yếu ở khu vực Đông Nam Á và Nam Á bao gồm Việt Nam, Lào, Campuchia, Thái Lan, Malaysia, Ấn Độ. Ở Việt Nam các giống mai vàng chỉ thấy ở vùng có khí hậu nhiệt đới tiêu biểu, trong khoảng Quảng Trị, Quảng Nam, Trị Thiên – Huế dọc theo các tỉnh giấc ven biển miền Trung trở vào.

Đặc điểm sinh thái

Cây ưa sáng, chịu được khô hạn, thường mọc lẫn với các loại cây bụi khác ở kiểu rừng thưa, rừng cây bụi ở đồi hay núi thấp.

Cây rụng lá vào đầu mùa khô, ra hoa trước khi ra lá. Mùa hoa thường trùng vào dịp Tết nguyên đán. Số lượng hoa quả trên cây không ít, tái sinh bất chợt cốt yếu từ hạt.

Mai vàng cất rộng rãi tinh dầu như cineole, borneol, linalool, benzyl alcohol, farnesol, terpineol, indol… và 1 vài chất khác như meratin, calycanthine, caroten…

Nghiên cứu hiện đại và tiên tiến cho thấy, hoa mai có tác dụng kích thích bài xuất dịch mật, ức chế 1 vài loại vi khuẩn như coli, trực khuẩn lỵ, trực khuẩn thương hàn, phẩy khuẩn tả, trực khuẩn lao…

Tính vị, công dụng

Theo dược khoa cổ truyền:

- Hoa mai vị ngọt tương đối đắng, tính ấm, ko độc.

- Có công dụng giải thử sinh tân, khai vị tán uất, hóa đàm, thường được dùng để chữa các chứng bệnh như sốt cao phiền khát, tức ngực, ho, hầu họng sưng đau, bỏng, lao hạch, chán ăn, chóng mặt…

Theo kinh nghiệm dân gian, ở các thức giấc phía Nam Việt Nam, người ta dùng vỏ thân cây hoa mai vàng ngâm rượu uống làm thuốc bổ đắng, giúp tiêu hóa thuận lợi.

Ở Campuchia và Lào, các lá non của cây thường được sử dụng làm rau ăn sống.

Những bài thuốc về Hoa Mai Vàng

1. Trúng thử gây tâm phiền, đau dầu, chóng mặt:

Bài 1: Hoa mai 9g sắc uống hoặc phối hợp hoa mai với hoa biển đậu và lá sen tươi lượng vừa đủ, sắc uống.

Bài 2: Mai vàng 15g, hoa cúc trắng 15g, huê hồng 15g, hãm uống thay trà.

2. Cải thiện huyết áp, cơn đau thắt ngực

Mai vàng 3g, thảo quyết minh 10g hãm với nước sôi trong bình kín, sau 20 phút thì sử dụng được, uống thay trà trong ngày.

3. Chướng bụng, đầy tương đối

Hoa mai 10g, mộc hương 10g, hương phụ 15g, sắc uống.

4. Đau bụng do lạnh

Mai vàng và chu sa liên lượng bằng nhau, sấy khô, tán bột, uống mỗi lần 3 – 6g với rượu nhạt.

5. Nôn

Hoa mai 5g, nước cốt gừng tươi 5ml. Đem hoa mai hãm với nước sôi trong bình kín, sau chừng 20 phút là dùng được, chắt ra hòa thêm nước gừng tươi rồi uống, mỗi ngày dùng 2 thang.

6. Viêm họng, viêm amydal cấp tính

Bài 1: Mai vàng 6g, huyền sâm 9g, bản lam căn 9g, sắc uống.

Bài 2: Mai 15g, kim ngân hoa 15g, thạch cao 15g, huyền sâm 9g, sắc uống.

Bài 3: Mai vàng 9g hãm với nước sôi trong bình kín, uống thay trà trong ngày.

7. Viêm họng kinh niên

Bài 1: Mai vàng 6g, hoa dành dành 5g, trà 20g. Ba thứ trộn lẫn chia làm hai lần hãm với nước sôi uống thay trà, mỗi ngày 1 thang.

Bài 2: Mai vàng và hoa ngọc thoa lượng vừa đủ đem nấu với 60g gạo tẻ thành cháo, chia ăn vài lần trong ngày, mỗi ngày 1 thang.

8. Viêm loét môi và niêm mạc mồm

Mai vàng tươi lượng vừa đủ đem giã nát với tuyến đường trắng rồi vắt lấy nước bôi vào thương tổn.

9. Ho dai dẳng

Bài 1: Hoa mai 9g hãm uống thay trà trong ngày.

Bài 2: Hoa mai 10g, khoản đông hoa 10g, gạo tẻ 60g, đa số đem ninh thành cháo, chế thêm một chút mật ong, chia ăn vài lần trong ngày.

10. Đau khớp do phong thấp

Hoa mai vàng 9g, thạch nam đằng 9g, thố nhĩ phong 9g, đam ngâm với 200ml rượu, mỗi lần uống 30 – 50ml.
